Saving energy reduces pollution from burning fossil fuels. Photo: Sharon AndersonSaving energy helps protect air and water.
It may surprise you that energy efficiency can help protect the water you drink and the air you breathe. Conserving energy not only saves money but also reduces pollution produced by burning fossil fuels. The combustion of fossil fuels contributes to global climate change through the production of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Collecting in the atmosphere like a thick blanket, these gases trap the sun’s heat and cause the planet to warm. Global climate change is expected to bring more severe weather conditions, including more hurricanes, flooding and droughts. Burning coal – typically the source of our electricity – can also contribute to acid rain, which is harming forests across the northeastern U.S. and acidifying lakes in places like the Adirondacks and Catskills. As acid rain illustrates, air and water pollution are intricately connected.
According to the New York State Energy $mart Program, running an energy-efficient household can save you up to 30% on energy bills. You can take simple steps to save energy and money - and reduce air and water pollution at the same time!
